Russian Radicals Look to America, 1825-1894
David Hecht
Through a documented study of their thought and lives, these pages trace the almost completely neglected impact of American institutional example and actuality upon an especially significant group of six pre-Marxian Russian radicals—Alexander Herzen, Nicholas Chernyshevski, Nicholas Ogarev, Michael Bakunin, Nicholas Chaikovski, and Peter Lavroy. These men had most pertinent observations to make on American institutions, and they said them with passion and sensitivity. All who are interested in the actualities of American-Russian relations will welcome this study of the figures who paved the way by their teaching and example for the generation that actually made the Russian Revolution.
