Walter Lionel George (20 March 1882, Paris, France – 30 January 1926) was an English writer, chiefly known for his popular fiction, which included feminist, pacifist, and pro-labour themes.
A post-catastrophe dystopia remarkable for its anti-sentimental attitude towards children. After a tidal wave obliterates a small coastal town in Venezuela, some of the surviving children are shipped out, but these ships in turn founder. Some children make it to a deserted island. The novel follows their progress growing up without adult supervision and observing their mishaps and mayhem with a somber tone. The theme of the sinister child became a fictional staple in the second half of the 20th century, but it represented a rather bold innovation in 1927. "The story contrasts sharply with the romantic Robinsonades so fashionable in the nineteenth century, and provides a remarkable anticipation of William Golding's classic Lord of the Flies. -- Stableford
Noting similarities between George's novel Children of the Morning (1926) and William Golding's celebrated Lord of the Flies (1954), Auberon Waugh suggested that George's work may have subliminally influenced Golding, although the latter denied having read it.
