The Verdict of Us All
Peter Lovesey
Members of London?s famed Detection Club have joined together to honor one of their own ? H.R.F. Keating, historian of the genre, winner of the Gold Dagger (for best novel) and the Diamond Dagger (for Lifetime Achievement), and creator of one of the greatest fictional sleuths, Inspector Ganesh Ghote. The Detection Club was founded in 1930 by Anthony Berkeley. Its first Honorary President was G.K. Chesterton, to be succeeded by such luminaries as Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Julian Symons and, for 15 years, Harry Keating. The current President, Simon Brett, has contributed a detective story in verse to this volumeThe Verdict of Us All contains new stories to honor H. R. F. Keating by some of the greatest names in current crime writing:
To the delight of mystery fans everywhere, London's legendary
Detection Club has chosen to celebrate the 80th birthday of
past-president and acclaimed mystery author H.R.F. Keating with this
enjoyable anthology of 17 short stories by some of the biggest names in
the business, including P.D. James, Peter Lovesey and Colin Dexter. The
tales run the gamut from Len Deighton's tongue-in-cheek "Sherlock Holmes
and the Titanic Swindle" to June Thomson's clever but grim "A Case for
Inspector Ghote." The standouts are from James and Lovesey; Baroness
James takes a break from chronicling Commander Dalgleish's exploits to
present a taut psychological tale of murder in "Hearing Ghote," while
Lovesey's "Popping Round to the Post" ranks with that author's smartest
and most twisty efforts.
